Vibrations in the steering wheel or foot pedals in the car can be a sign that there is a leak in the exhaust system. These vibrations probably occur due to rusting of the exhaust system due to frequent short trips that leave condensation on the exhaust. Reduced gas mileage is another sign of a leaky exhaust system. The leak in the exhaust system could be causing the car to work harder and get less out of gasoline than it normally would.
Popping and hissing sounds are another sign there could be a leak. These sounds will occur when the engine is on. Burnt paint could also be a sign of a leak that releases heat out into the car's exterior.
