Common Fluid Leaks

Probably every driver has experienced that sinking feeling when going out to start their car and discovering a puddle of liquid seeping underneath it. There are several liquid-filled systems that play their part in your engine's performance, and any one of them can spring a leak, possibly leaving you stranded.

The first thing you should do is determine the color of the leak, as it will indicate what kind of fluid is involved. Place a white piece of paper or cardboard under the leak. Motor oil is a dark charcoal color, while coolant is bluish. Power steering and brake fluids are translucent beige. Transmission fluid is coffee-colored. Once you have narrowed the leak down to its location, you'll have an idea of how to proceed.
